The Dawoodi Bohras of Visakhapatnam

Spiritual Heritage and Leadership

The Dawoodi Bohras are a Muslim community guided by the teachings of the Fatimid Imams—the direct descendants of Prophet Muhammad. For centuries, the community has flourished under the stewardship of the al-Dai al-Mutlaq, who serves as the spiritual and temporal head.

Today, under the benevolent leadership of the 53rd al-Dai al-Mutlaq, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS, the community of approximately one million members worldwide is recognized for its commitment to peace, education, and social progress.

The Vizag Chapter: A Strategic Genesis

In Visakhapatnam, the community comprises nearly 190 households, forming a close-knit and vibrant unit. The term "Bohra" is etymologically rooted in the Gujarati word vohru—meaning "to trade"—a reflection of their ancestral lineage as a merchant class.

The community’s history in Visakhapatnam (formerly Waltair) is deeply intertwined with the city’s industrial evolution. During the 1960s, as the Visakh Refinery (commissioned by Caltex) and Coromandel Fertilizers transformed the region into a trade hub, pioneering Bohra families arrived with a vision for strategic entrepreneurship.
